ABSTRACT
The Citadel (al-qal'a) of Jerusalem is one of the most significant landmarks in the topography of the city. For nearly a millennium, the citadel served as Jerusalem’s main military stronghold, during which it played a vital role in the political, economic and social life of the city.
Following Israel’s occupation of Jerusalem in 1967 and its subsequent annexation, the citadel was renamed the “Tower of David” as part of the general Israeli policy to “Judaize” archaeological and historical sites in order to promote Israel’s historical claims to them.
