ABSTRACT
Although my first encounter with Sophie Halaby was memorable, I knew very little about her personal life when asked by the Jerusalem Quarterly to write this essay. But I do have knowledge of Palestinian art history and Sophie’s
position therein. Discovering some aspects of her personality enriched that knowledge.
I sought information from distant relatives who had accumulated extensive family archives.
